Speaking in a recent interview with GamesIndustry, Dead Island 2 game director David Stenton said that though the game does indeed have a little but in common with that original 2014 trailer in terms of tone, Dambuster Studios didn’t really use that as inspiration for the final product, and instead wanted to craft its own vision of the game. That, of course, didn’t pan out, and Dambuster Studios would go on to take the project’s reins- and the final project, according to the studio, ended up deviating from Yager’s vision quite a bit. It was first announced nearly a decade ago, back in 2014, and at the time, prior to multiple delays and developer changes, it was set to be developed by Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager. If players forget that the game even exists come February, they will opt to buy other games that stand out more in their minds.ĭead Island 2 launches on February 3, 2023, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.Dead Island 2 is finally out, but the road to launch has been a long and bumpy one for the zombie action RPG. Dead Island 2 doesn't need an ambitious marketing campaign to be a success, but it does need some effort put into the marketing to remind players of its upcoming release. Dead Island 2 may be releasing earlier in the month, but games like Hogwarts Legacy, Like a Dragon: Ishin!, Octopath Traveler 2, and Wild Hearts are releasing shortly after. There are a lot of good games set to release in February 2023. It would be a shame for a game that has been in development for as long as Dead Island 2 to fail because there wasn't enough support behind it. Other examples like Titanfall 2 have not done well due to a lack of acknowledgment from its publisher and poor planning around its release date. For example, Soul Hackers 2 from Atlus struggled to reach its expected sales level partially because there was not a big push by Sega as the game's release date was approaching. It is easy to forget that Dead Island 2 even exists with how little people have seen from it, which is not a good sign considering its approaching release date.Īn unfortunate reality is that good games can underperform due to a lack of a marketing push by their publishers. With how little information has been given since Dead Island 2's reveal, the Goat Simulator 3 trailer parodying the game is arguably more memorable than the game itself. With all the buzz around Dead Island 2 from the summer, it should be a no-brainer for Deep Silver to capitalize on the hype and show a little more every month or so. The problem is that there has been little marketing or updates for the game since those trailers. The summer of 2022 had more talk around Dead Island 2 than any time before since its E3 trailer in 2014. Dead Island 2's official reveal trailer released not long after that, as well as new gameplay footage. It became so iconic that the reveal trailer for Goat Simulator 3 parodied it. When the jogger-centric trailer was shown off in 2014, it stuck with players for a long time. Dead Island's zombie action built around environmental weapons was rarely seen outside of games like the Dead Rising series. Despite the mixed reception, the game did well enough to warrant a sequel. The first Dead Island game is something of a cult classic among gamers with its fair share of ups and downs. With little concrete evidence that the game was still in the works, it seemed abandoned until Gamescom 2022, where it received a trailer. The game was announced in 2014 at E3, though it did not have many updates outside of rumors for years. ![]() The upcoming Dead Island 2 is such a game that has languished in development. Games like Duke Nukem Forever have shown that a longer development time did not benefit the final product while others like The Last Guardian and Kingdom Hearts 3 ended up being worthwhile products. When a game is stuck in development for such a long time, it is difficult to not be concerned about the game is going to turn out in the end.
